I had been interested in obtaining my HAM license, but the Morse code requirement kept me from pursuing it. Is that still a requirement?
I still recall my CB license call letters (KJJ2304) during the CB craze of the mid 70's when a license was a requirement by the FCC. Time does fly....

I had been interested in obtaining my HAM license, but the Morse code requirement kept me from pursuing it. Is that still a requirement? I still recall my CB license call letters (KJJ2304) during the CB craze of the mid 70's when a license was a requirement by the FCC. Time does fly.... I don't recall mine, just the handle, might not have had a license, it was about the time the FCC lost control of the band, skip was going crazy, etc. Fun times. 23CH Base station with SSB. The FCC just legalized talking past 150 miles on CB last year. 11m band (CB) is one of the best bands for talking long distance on when the sun has lots of sun spots. Just made that Australian DX contact that much more thrilling, it being against regs and all, besides the talking to the other side of the world thing. Had a Uniden PC122 in my armored personnel carrier in Desert Shield/Storm. Made a contact to Brownsville Texas from the driver seat of an M113 on CB CH38 USB. All of 12W into a crummy little antenna clamped behind the drivers hatch. That guy had good ears. Admin, if you think you might have some radio interest to rekindle, I suggest you get your ham license. It is fairly easy to pass the Tech class so not a huge time investment and that will get your foot dipped into the radio hobby to see if it still has the zip as it did before. So many inexpensive radios, kits, projects online, and so many facets and aspects to the hobby. From underground cavern communications, to interplanetary communications and even to use the radio for emergencies when the cell towers are down and power is out.

Taking the test that is. From what I recall though the test had a bunch of electrical theory questions about ohms and such that I couldn't quite get my head around. My forte is mechanical not electrical. Come to think of it, I still have a Galaxy radio that I never bothered to install. If memory serves correct a 102 inch stainless whip antenna was the cat's meow. That was what I used back in the day anyway. Only problem was you had to watch where you went. I ended up breaking out a whole line of fluorescent light tubes one night in a drive-in.....

How did the test go? Do we now have some new fledgling HAMsters in the valley?

No new hams from this exam. We will host another one in mid March. Tough test?
